I still remember the first time I loaded into Terraria and thought it was just a cozy little sandbox. A few hours later, I was neck-deep in Hardmode, dying to enemies that could erase me in two hits, and obsessing over one very specific prize: the Clockwork Assault Rifle.

For anyone who has spent time in Terraria, you know the surface simplicity is a trap. Hardmode flips the whole world into something far more dangerous. Enemies hit harder, bosses get meaner, and the loot pool expands dramatically. That is where the Clockwork Assault Rifle comes in.
My obsession started after I read about its three-round burst. The rifle is not just a spray-and-pray gun. It fires in three-round bursts, with each burst delayed by four ticks, for a grand total of 12 ticks. Once the burst is finished, the rifle takes a total of 26 ticks before the next cycle. That rhythm makes it feel punchy and controlled.
Because of its low ammo consumption and high fire rate, this weapon is fantastic when I am facing packs of enemies. If I am using expensive ammo like Crystal Bullets or Chlorophyte Bullets, the Clockwork Assault Rifle helps me stretch every round further while still dishing out solid damage. That combination is rare in Terraria.
But getting it? That was another story entirely.
Step one: Harvesting the Guide Voodoo Doll ðŸŽ
The Clockwork Assault Rifle does not appear in chests, and you cannot craft it. The only source is the Wall of Flesh, which means I had to jump through every Hardmode player's favorite hoop first: sacrificing a Guide Voodoo Doll.
I went to the Underworld and started farming Voodoo Demons. These floaty little nightmares drop the Guide Voodoo Doll, and yes, the item is exactly as creepy as it sounds. Once I had a doll in my inventory, I walked over to the lava and threw it in. That kills the doll and summons the Wall of Flesh.

I will be honest: the first time I did this, I was not ready. The Wall of Flesh is one of the strongest bosses in Terraria. It occupies the entire screen, sweeping toward you with relentless pressure, and it deals huge amounts of damage. My early attempts ended quickly and painfully. 😅
The grind and the drop
After defeating the Wall of Flesh, the Clockwork Assault Rifle has a chance to drop. The chances are higher if you play in expert mode, which is exactly what I did on my later runs. That does not mean the drop is guaranteed. It means you may need to repeat the entire ritual multiple times.
That is the part most guides gloss over. You beat the Wall of Flesh, you hold your breath, you scan the loot pile, and sometimes you get a Pwnhammer, a Breaker Blade, or a Laser Rifle instead of the rifle you actually wanted. Then you go back to farming Voodoo Demons, building another bridge, and trying again.
Here is the cycle I settled into:
-
Farm Voodoo Demons in the Underworld until I had several Guide Voodoo Dolls saved up.
-
Build a long, flat runway across the lava, because fighting the Wall of Flesh without a clean path is a death sentence.
-
Summon the boss, keep my distance, and focus on consistent damage rather than risky bursts.
-
Check the drop. If no Clockwork Assault Rifle, repeat.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Fire mode | Three-round burst |
| Burst delay | 4 ticks per burst, 12 ticks total |
| Total cycle | 26 ticks |
| Ammo efficiency | Low consumption |
| Best target | Groups of enemies |
Expert mode made the difference for me
I am not going to pretend I got the rifle on my first Wall of Flesh kill. I did not. But in expert mode, the increased drop chance eventually worked in my favor. After several kills, the Clockwork Assault Rifle finally appeared in the loot pile, and I immediately equipped it.
The first thing I noticed was how satisfying the burst pattern felt. Three shots, a tiny beat, then another burst. It chunks through enemies and feels great against groups of Hardmode mobs. Because the rifle uses so little ammo, I could run expensive bullets without constantly worrying about my reserves.
If you are still hunting for this weapon in 2026, my advice is simple: do not get discouraged. This is one of those Terraria grinds that tests your patience, but it is absolutely worth it. Save up multiple Guide Voodoo Dolls so you can fight the Wall of Flesh back-to-back. Prepare your arena before you throw the doll into lava. And if you can handle the extra damage, play in expert mode to improve your odds.
The Clockwork Assault Rifle is not just a good Hardmode gun. It is a reminder of why Terraria keeps pulling me back after all these years. The game hides exceptional rewards behind multi-step rituals and boss fights, and then it dares you to keep trying. I am glad I did.
